Breathing 2026: Microorganisms

Artist Zhao Rongjie’s filmed documentation of her “Microorganisms” project, where she cultivates, cares for, and creates art from bacterial cellulose.

โ€œMicroorganismsโ€, the most recent iteration of Zhao Rongjieโ€™s decades-long Breathing project, is a documentary film using variations of kombucha SCOBY[1] symbiotic biofilm as its creative medium. Through fermentation, it explores symbiosis, decay and rebirth, and reflects on humanityโ€™s interdependence with nature on multiple scales.

[1] SCOBY is an acronym that stands for Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast.
